Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh

Bangladeshi Statesman. He served as the 7th Prime Minister of Bangladesh from March 27, 1988 to August 12, 1989. He earned both his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Dacca and later became a lawyer in England. While in the United Kingdom, he was an important component of the Bangladeshi independence movement.

After the country became independent in 1971, he stayed in the political arena of the country and later formed a group to help provide legal aid to individuals who either opposed the government or were mistreated by them. He was jailed briefly in December of 1974 by the Sheikh Mujibur Rahman government, but later released.

In the late 1970s, he was courted by the government of General Ziaur Rahman and later served in several government positions. During this time, he was a member of the BNP (Bangladeshi Nationalist Party). He was later fired by Ziaur Rahman after a feud with another top BNP leader. In 1985, he joined the Jatiyo Party of General Hussain Muhammad Ershad and headed several government ministries before becoming prime minister in 1988.

He served in this post for one year before Ershad replaced him with Kazi Zafar Ahmed in 1989. During that same year, he became vice president under Ershad and served for one year before stepping down to make way for a parliamentary democracy. He later went back to the BNP and continued in the country’s political arena.

He was also jailed several times for his opposition to both a military-led government and a government led by the political party Awami League. He still maintained a presence on the political scene up until his passing.
