American Baseball Athlete
For twelve seasons (1961 and 1964 to 1974), he was a pitcher with the Kansas City/Oakland Athletics, Milwaukee Brewers, Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals and Atlanta Braves. Born Lewis Bernard Krause, Jr., his father Lewis Krause, Sr. was a former Major League Baseball pitcher with the Philadelphia Athletics during the 1930s.
He attended Chester High School in Pennsylvania and within hours of graduation, he was signed as an amateur free agent by the Kansas City Athletics.
He made his Major League debut at the age of eighteen on June 16, 1961 and tossed a three-hit shutout against the Los Angeles Angels in Kansas City. Following two years in the Minor Leagues (1962 to 1963), he returned to the Major Leagues in 1964, however he struggled with an elevated ERA for the next two seasons (1964 and 1965).
In 1966, he developed into a solid pitcher and produced a career-high 14 wins with a respectable 2.99 ERA. He has the distinction of being the first starting pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers following their relocation from Seattle.
In 321 career regular season games, he compiled a 68 win, 91 loss record, with a 4.00 lifetime ERA, in 1,283 innings pitched. He died from cancer.
