He was best known to television viewers as Johnny “Johnny Boy” Soprano on the HBO hit series “The Sopranos” from 1999 to 2007. He attended Stanford University, where he performed for the Stanford Mendicants, an all-male a cappella group.
In 1977, he graduated from Stanford with a BA and received his MFA from the NYU Tisch School of the Arts Theatre Program, where he trained under the guidance of Ron Van Lieu, Olympia Dukakis and Nora Dunfee, three years later. After graduation, he first made his mark in acting on the theatrical stage, on and off Broadway. He performed in numerous productions through the years, with the most significant being “Jersey Boys,” where he performed as the character Angelo “Gyp” DeCarlo two thousand times.
In 1991, he made his television acting debut as a mugger in the television movie “N.Y.P.D. Mounted.” Besides “The Sopranos,” his other television credits would include “Law & Order,” “Dirty Sexy Money,” “Made in Jersey,” “American Crime Story,” and “For Life.” Two years later, he made his “big screen” debut in the film “Carlito’s Way.” He would go on to appear in such films as “Walking and Talking,” (1996) “Maid in Manhattan,” (2002) “Enchanted,” (2007) “The Wannabe,” (2015) and “The Report.” (2019) He passed away after a long battle with colon cancer.
