He was a co-recipient of the 2014 Nobel Prize in physics, along with fellow scientists Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura, for his work in the invention of the world’s first efficient blue light-emitting diodes.

He graduated from Kyoto University in 1952 before working at Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., now Panasonic Corp. In 1981, he started working at Nagoya University as a professor . While at Nagoya University, he worked with fellow scientist Hiroshi Amano to produce gallium nitride crystals, and succeeded in 1989 in creating the world’s first blue LED.

This invention led to bright and energy-saving white light sources, which are widely known as LED lamps. He was honored in 1997 by the Japanese government with the Medal with Purple Ribbon, an honor bestowed on those who have made contributions to academic and artistic developments.
In 2014, he, along with Amano and fellow scientist Shuji Nakamura, earned the Nobel Prize in physics for their work with LED lighting. This work also earned him many other scientific and academic honors and awards. He passed away of pneumonia.
