He started his television carreer as a stage manager at a Ohio TV station and then directed newscasts for an Indianapolis station when David Letterman was a weatherman.

His job at the station led to him working with the Los Angeles Philharmonic on the Hollywood Bowl telecasts starting in 1987. He was an original member of the Beverly Hills Unlisted Jazz Band led by actor-trombonist Conrad Janis. During his career he won 17 Emmy awards.
