He was best known to television viewers for his roles as Jack Gallo on the NBC sitcom “Just Shoot Me!” from 1997 to 2003 and as Albert “Pops” Solomon on the ABC sitcom “The Goldbergs” from 2013 to his passing. He graduated from George School in Pennsylvania in 1951 and later attended Haverford College. In 1955, he graduated from Columbia College of Columbia University with a Bachelor of Arts in performing arts and drama. After college, he joined the United States Army.

When his service in the Army was finished, he studied at the The Actors Studio with Lee Strasberg and Uta Hagen. In 1960, he got his acting start in the television movie “The Closing Door.” Besides “Just Shoot Me!” and “The Goldbergs,” he went on to perform on the “small screen” in such series as “Naked City,” “Take Five,” “Murphy’s Law,” “High Tide,” and “Entourage.” He signed a contract with Columbia Pictures in 1961 and that same year, made his “big screen” debut in the film “The Young Doctors.”

He would go on to an extensive career in film, appearing in such works as “The Longest Day,” (1962) “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,” (1966) “The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre,” (1967) “The Owl and the Pussycat,” (1970) “Rollercoaster,” (1977) “Look Who’s Talking,” (1989) and “The Cable Guy “(1996) .

George Segal  was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 1967 for his performance in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.” During his career, he also acted on the Broadway stage in various theatrical productions. He was an avid banjo player and made three albums. He passed away from complications of bypass surgery.
