For five seasons (1961 to 1965), he played at the second base position with the Boston Red Sox. Born Charles Thomas Schilling, he attended St. Mary’s High School in New York and enrolled at Manhattan College, prior to being signed as an amateur free agent by the Boston Red Sox in 1958.
After securing the starting second baseman spot, he made his Major League debut on April 11, 1961. He went on to produce a career-high 167 hits and led the American League in plate appearances with 738, while finishing in third-place in Rookie of the Year voting. Additionally, he received team MVP honors that season (1961).
He suffered a wrist injury in 1962 which limited his playing time, however he had a bounce-back season the following year (1963), when he produced a career-high 8 home runs. He was acquired by the Minnesota Twins prior to the start of the 1966 season, however he retired before playing in a game.

In 541 career regular season games, he compiled 470 hits, with a .239 lifetime batting average. After retiring from baseball, he worked for two-decades as a junior high school math teacher.
