Following his parent’s divorce, Buddy moved with his mother to Richmond, Virginia and at the age of seventeen, he took up the drums and acquired experience with bandleader and trumpeter Billy Butterfield.
While a member of the Newton Thomas Trio, he caught the attention of jazz guitarist Charlie Byrd. He joined Byrd’s ensemble and recorded on the acclaimed albums “The Guitar Artistry of Charlie Byrd” (1960), “Charlie Byrd at the Village Vanguard” (1961) and “Blues Sonata” (1961).
