For thirteen seasons (1967 to 1969 and 1970 to 1981), he played at the right-wing position in the National Hockey League with the Chicago Black Hawks, Vancouver Canucks, Boston Bruins, Edmonton Oilers and Colorado Rockies. He began his career with his native team the Saskatoon Quakers of the Western Canada Senior Hockey League in 1962, prior to being promoted to the NHL during the 1967-1968 season.
While with Vancouver, he produced a career-high 38 goals-scored (1972-1973). During the course of his career, he topped the 20-goal scoring mark nine-times and achieved all star status twice (1973 and 1974). While with Boston, he was a contributor to the Bruins’ reaching the Stanley Cup Finals in 1974, 1977 and 1978. During the 1978 Stanley Cup Finals, he scored a game winning, overtime goal against the Montreal Canadiens in game four.
In 764 career regular season games, he compiled 271 goals and 286 assists. After retiring from hockey, he worked in the roofing industry. His older brother Cliff Schmautz briefly played in the NHL.
