American basketball player
Hall of Fame Professional Basketball Coach, Professional Basketball Player, Broadcaster. For seven seasons (1956 to 1963), he played at the point-guard position in the National Basketball Association with the Minneapolis/Los Angeles Lakers and Chicago Packers/Zephyrs.
Born William Robert Leonard, he made his initial impression on the basketball court during his years at Gerstmeyer High School in Indiana and led his team to a sectional title in 1950. He enrolled at Indiana University and captained the Hoosiers’ squad which captured the NCAA Title in 1953 and scored the winning points to preserve the victory (69 to 68) over the University of Kansas Jayhawks.
Selected by the Baltimore Bullets during the 2nd round of the 1954 NBA Draft, his professional career was delayed for two-years (1954 to 1956) while he served with the United States Army. He experienced a run at a title when the Minneapolis Lakers reached the NBA Finals in 1959 (defeated by the Boston Celtics). In 426 career regular season games, he compiled 4,204 points and 1,427 assists.
After retiring as a player, he began his lengthy coaching career when he succeeded Jack McMahon as head coach of the Chicago Zephyrs during the 1962-1963 season and remained at that capacity (1962 to 1964) when the franchise relocated to Baltimore and were renamed the Bullets.
Leonard succeeded Larry Staverman as head coach of the Indiana Pacers of the American Basketball Association and during his tenure (1968 to 1980, the franchise joined the NBA in 1976 after the ABA folded), he guided his teams to three ABA Championships (1970, 1972 and 1973).
He compiled a 573 win, 534 loss regular season record as a coach. During the mid 1980s, he was added to the Indiana Pacers’ television and radio broadcasts as an analyst and during his time serving at that capacity, he coined the phrase “Boom, baby!” whenever a home team player scored from the three-point range. He suffered a heart attack in 2011, however he remained on game broadcasts in a limited basis.
He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014 for his accomplishments as a coach.
