Born William McGuire, his interest in acting was sparked during his teenage years and he made his Broadway debut in the play “Bright Boy” (1944).
He studied Agricultural Engineering at the University of Massachusetts and during World War II, he served with the United States Army with who he was stationed in England. Following his return home, he focussed fully on acting and appeared in the original Broadway run of “South Pacific” (1949 to 1954). During the early 1950s, he began a lengthy association with TV and films.
