He is remembered for breaking tradition with his unconventionally-titled works in association with the off-Broadway and Broadway stages. Born Arthur Lee Koenig, his father was an advertising salesman.
Arthur’s parents divorced during his early youth and following his mother’s remarrying, he took his stepfather’s last name. Raised on Long Island, he began writing while attending Harvard University from where he graduated with an Engineering degree. He found instant, commercial success with his initial writing effort titled “Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mamma’s Hung You in the Closet and I’m Fellin’ So Sad.”

The play first hit the off-Broadway stage in early 1962 and the following year (1963), it came to Broadway which earned him a Vernon Rice Award (later renamed Drama Desk Award). The story was made into a 1967 motion picture adaptation. His other works from the 1960s include “Asylum” (1962) and “The Day the Whores Came Out to Play Tennis/ Sing to Me Through Open Windows” (1965).
His Broadway production “Indians” (1969 to 1970) earned him a Tony Award nomination and a Pulitzer Prize nomination. The play was made into a 1976 motion picture adaptation titled “Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull’s History Lesson” which starred Burt Lancaster and Paul Newman.

“Wings” (1979) earned him a Tony Award nomination and a Pulitzer Prize nomination and “Nine” (1982 to 1984) earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical.
The later was made into a 2009 motion picture adaptation. Additionally, Kopit received an Edgar Allan Poe Award nomination for his writing of the screenplay for the TV-Mini series “Hands of a Stranger” (1987). He penned the screenplay for the 1994 TV-Movie “Roswell.”
