For seven seasons (1969 and 1971 to 1976), he was an outfielder with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Oakland Athletics. Born Angel Luis Mangual, he was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates as an amateur free agent in 1966.
He made his Major League debut on September 15, 1969 and played in six games that season. After he was acquired by the Oakland Athletics in 1970, he went on to experience three world championship seasons (1972 to 1974).
He will be remembered for delivering the game winning single for the Athletics off pitcher Clay Carroll against the Cincinnati Reds in the bottom of the ninth inning during Game 4 of the 1972 World Series on October 19, 1972. In 450 career regular season games, he compiled 304 hits and a .245 lifetime batting average.
