Esteban Edward Torres Find a Grave
He served in the United States House of Representatives from the 34th District of California from January 3, 1983 to January 3, 1999.
He served in the United States Army from 1949 to 1953. In the late 1950s, he went to work at a Chrysler plant and later got involved in the United Auto Workers union. During the 1960s, he rose through the ranks of the UAW. From 1968 to 1974, he served as the executive director of TELACU, a community development corporation.
In 1974, he made his first try for a seat in the House of Representatives, but was not successful.
He went on to serve in the Carter Administration as both ambassador to UNESCO and White House Special Assistant for Hispanic Affairs. In 1982, he tried, as a Democrat, again for the House and was successful in the general election that year. He went on to serve in Congress for the next sixteen years before stepping down in 1999.
After retiring from Congress, he continued serving on various boards and commissions.
