She was best known to television viewers as Miss Hawthorne, the self-proclaimed White Witch of the village Devil’s End on the popular British television series “Doctor Who.” After being educated at Cheltenham Ladies College, she got her start in acting in the repertory theatre.
In 1953, she made her television debut on the series “The Story of the Treasure Seekers.” Besides “Doctor Who,” she went on to appear in such series as “Our Miss Pemberton,” “Steptoe and Son,” “Armchair Theatre,” “Ours Is a Nice House,” “The Witches’ Brew,” “The Young Ones,” and “One Foot in the Grave.” A year later, she made her film debut in “The Belles of St. Trinian’s.”
Her later film credits would include “West 11,” (1963) “Mutiny on the Buses,” (1972) “The Pink Panther Strikes Again,” (1976) and “The Missionary.” (1982) Her last acting appearance came in 2017 when she reprised her role of Miss Hawthorne on the video “White Witch of Devil’s End.”
