He was best known to film viewers as the villain “The Brow” in the 1990 film “Dick Tracy.” He was also known for his portrayal of the robot boxer Maynard Flash on the memorable 1963 “Twilight Zone” episode “Steel.”
While a student at Burbank High School, he was a star running back. He served in the U.S. Merchant Marines and U.S. Navy during the Second World War, then attended Loyola Marymount University, where he received a football scholarship and boxed. After college, he tried a career in football, boxing and as a lifeguard before going into acting.

His first acting role came on a episode of the television series “Gangbusters” in 1952. Besides “The Twilight Zone,” he went on to appear in numerous television series such as “Annette,” “The Untouchables,” “Peter Gunn,” “Batman,” “Mission: Impossible,” “Mannix,” “Fantasy Island,” “In the Heat of the Night,” and “24.”
That same year, he made his “big screen” debut in the film “She’s Working Her Way Through College.” Besides “Dick Tracy,” his later film credits would include such productions as “Rebel Without a Cause,” (1955) “Sunrise at Campobello,” (1960) “PT 109,” (1963) “Our Man Flint,” (1966) “Cool Hand Luke,” (1967) “The Enforcer,” (1976) “Every Which Way but Loose,” (1978) “Johnny Dangerously,” (1984) and “Legion.”
(2010) In the majority of the films and television series that he appeared in, he performed his own stunts. He passed away from complications of a stroke.
