Chuck Hartenstein American Baseball Player
Major League Baseball Player, Coach. For six-seasons (1966 to 1970 and 1977), he was a pitcher with the Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals, Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays. Born Charles Oscar Hartenstein Jr., he made his initial impression on the baseball diamond during his years at Seguin High School in Texas and contributed to his team’s winning a state championship.
He enrolled at the University of Texas and was a member of two Longhorn squads which captured the Southwest Conference Title in 1962 and 1963. Signed by the Chicago Cubs as an amateur free agent in 1964, he made his Major League debut on September 11, 1965 and pitched in 5 games that season.
While with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1969, he produced career-highs with 5 wins, in 56 games. After several years of playing in the Pacific Coast League, he returned to the Major Leagues in 1977 and had the distinction of being on the Toronto Blue Jays’ roster during the inaugural season.
In 187 career regular season games, he compiled a 17 win, 19 loss record with a lifetime .452 ERA, in 297 innings-pitched. After retiring as a player, he had coaching stints with the Cleveland Indians and Milwaukee Brewers, in addition to serving as a Major League scout for nearly two-decades.
