He went on to become a mainstay of the Niner defensive line for the next fifteen years before retiring after the 1973 season. During his career with team, he played in two NFC Championship games, 2 Pro Bowls, and was a second team All-Pro twice.
He also was one of the last NFL linemen to wear the two bar “quarterback” helmet. After he retired, he was honored by the Niners with both his number “70” retired and being named to the team’s Hall of Fame.
In 1988, he was awarded more than 2.3 million dollars in damages by a court after the 49ers were found to have not properly informed him of the extent of the numerous injuries he sustained during his career with the team. He passed away from kidney and heart failure.
