Former Governor of Louisiana
US Congressman, Louisiana Governor. He served as the 52nd Governor of Louisiana from March 14, 1988 to January 13, 1992. He also served in the United States House of Representatives from 4th District of Louisiana from January 3, 1981 to March 14, 1988.
He graduated as president and valedictorian of his high school class and attended Harvard University, where he graduated with his bachelor’s degree in government and economics in 1964. Three years later, he earned his master’s degree from Harvard Business School. After college, he went to work in the business world.
He got his start in the political world first as the campaign manager for Edwin Edwards, who ran for governor in 1971, and then as Edwards’ commissioner of administration. In 1978, he made his first run for political office, which was for a seat in the United States House of Representatives, but lost his bid to fellow Democrat Buddy Leach.
Two years later, he, as a Democrat, ran for the same seat and was successful in the November general election. He went on to serve in the House for the next seven years before leaving his seat for the governorship of Louisiana in 1988. During his tenure in the House, he compiled a very conservative voting record and supported many of the policies of Republican President Ronald Reagan.
He decided to run in the 1987 Louisiana gubernatorial election and was successful in the general election primary. He went on to serve the next four years as governor before coming in third in the 1991 general election primary to both Edwin Edwards and David Duke.
During his tenure as governor, which was marred by various mistakes, he switched parties from Democrat to Republican in March of 1991. After leaving political office, he went back into the business world, but also made both a brief run for governor in 1995 and for president in 2012.
