Major League Baseball Player. For ten seasons (1949 to 1958), he was a pitcher with the Philadelphia Phillies. Born Robert John Miller, he attended St. Mary’s High School in Michigan and served with the United States Army during World War II. Following his return home, he played collegiate baseball at University of Detroit Mercy, prior to being signed as an amateur free agent by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1948.

He made his Major League debut on September 16, 1949 and pitched in three games that season. The following year (1950), he earned a spot in the Phillies’ starting rotation and produced a career high eleven wins that season as a contributor to the team nicknamed “The Whiz Kids” who won the 1950 National League Pennant.
He pitched in one game against the New York Yankees during the 1950 World Series. In 261 career regular season games, he compiled a 42 win 42 loss record, with a lifetime 3.96 ERA, in 822 innings pitched. After retiring as a player, he served as baseball coach at the University of Detroit Mercy. He died from natural causes.
