Television News Journalist. For more than four-decades, he served as a national and international correspondent with NBC News.
He created the religion-themed, PBS series “Religion and Ethics Newsweekly” which ran from 1997 until 2017, in addition to serving as the program’s host.

Born Robert Gordon Abernathy, his grandfather (paternal) was a major religious figure in Washington D.C. Bob received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, before launching his broadcasting career at a radio station in Morrisville, Pennsylvania.
He joined NBC in 1952 and one-year later (1953), he was assigned to the Washington DC bureau. He served as an international correspondent in London before returning to Washington and later Los Angeles. During the 1960s, he anchored coverage of the 1965 Northeast Blackout which effected a large portion of the Northeastern United States and Canada.

During the 1970s, he contributed to the TV series “The Today Show” and shared anchor duties with Tom Brokaw at NBC. From 1988 until 1994, he served as an international correspondent for NBC in Moscow. He died from natural causes.
